These Events Support Those Who Lost Their Homes in the LA Fires

On Jan 20th, 2025 - Inauguration Day and MLK Day - We Are Here Gatherings happened across the country.

The goal of these gatherings was to gain perspective on where we are at this moment in our country, and gain strength from our local communities. We wanted to remind people that nearly half the country voted for a woman president, lift up the accomplishments women did make in this past election and affirm that ultimately even though we are a divided country, we are all in this together.

In light of the devastation in LA from the fires, these gatherings also served as fundraisers for people who lost their homes.

At each gathering, hosts showed the following four of Tiffany Shlain's short films, some we updated for this moment, some we are re-releasing, and one we found in which we hear directly from MLK, in an excerpt from one of his acclaimed speeches.

We invite you to watch them too.

And we are very happy that finally, after a century in the making, President Biden declared the Equal Rights Amendment

to be the law of the land as the 28th Amendment. You can watch a short video by Senator Gillibrand on C-Span or on Instagram

explaining where things stand.

These gatherings are an initiative by Tiffany Shlain's studio Let it Ripple and Dr. Nancy O’Reilly of Women Connect4Good.

Below are the films along with a discussion guide and specific actions and ways to support people in LA.

Films to WATCH

We recommend clicking through on Vimeo and watching full screen

To download, click "Vimeo" in right lower corner of play bar, then click the download button

We recommend watching them in the following order: We Are Here, Senator Gillibrand, 30,000 Days, A Declaration of Interdependence, and an excerpt from MLK's speech. To delve deeper into the history of women and power, we suggest watching 50/50 below.

We Are Here (8 min) contextualizes this moment in feminist history, and documents the creative process and ideas behind Tiffany Shlain's moveable monument, Dendrofemonology; A Feminist History Tree Ring. A shorter version was released last fall. This new one was updated with recent events since the election.

50/50 (20 mins) This film is optional for the gatherings if you want to go deeper into the history of women presidents and prime ministers around the world.

30,000 Days (11 mins) explores the 30,000 year history of humans across cultures thinking about how to live a meaningful and purposeful life.

A Declaration of Interdependence (4 mins) demonstrates the vast potential of collaboration in the 21st century. It premiered in 2011 and its message in 2025 feels more timely than ever.

For those of you who want to go deeper on Martin Luther King, Jr's History, we recommend watching the Oscar Nominated feature length documentary King: A Filmed Record - Montgomery to Memphis by Sidney Lumet and Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

Here is a three min video from Senator Gillibrand explaining where things stand now that former President Biden declared
the Equal Rights Amendment, The 28th amendment, as the law of the land.
