This character education on “kindness” will involve students understanding the definition of kindness & writing acrostic poems. The only background information necessary to carry out this lesson is for the teacher to be able to explain what an acrostic poem is and have example of acrostic poems for students to see. The purpose of the lesson is for students to practice kind statements about their classmates. By writing an acrostic poem about another Individual (who they have not chosen) it will force them to think about what they know about this person and recognize his/her attributes. Identifying synonyms for the work “Kindness” will help students think about various ways we show kindness to others on a daily basis. In addition, by writing a poem, as opposed to a narrative piece, students will practice expressing ideas in an unusual format that will require more creative thought.
